Life At The Fringe

Tue May 09 2017

I know all about living at the fringes of society. First, I was one of only two kids in first grade who had divorced parents, plus my mom was gay. But there was more to it than that. View at huffingtonpost »

Unaccompanied Minor

Thu Apr 13 2017

I had watched the girl crying on her father’s lap in the pre-boarding area. I knew there was no part of her that wanted to get on that plane, but nine- or ten-year-olds don’t get a say in such matters. View at huffingtonpost »

Why I am Not Going to See the New Beauty and the Beast

Mon Mar 27 2017

Our relationship mimicked the romantic theme of “girl falls in love with a man who has an anger management problem, but their love heals his beastliness and turns him into a kind prince.” Except in my case, it didn’t work out that way. View at huffingtonpost »

We Actually Do Need Another Hero

Tue Mar 21 2017

We need heroes. We need people—both alive and deceased—to inspire us, but it has to be the right fit. We need people we relate to in order to show us that we, too, can achieve greatness. View at huffingtonpost »

When Hate Crimes Hit Close to Home

Tue Mar 07 2017

I clicked through a photo gallery of vandalism at the Waad Hakolel Cemetery, where my great-grandparents, aunts, and uncles are buried. Toppled graves, defaced photos on headstones. Defaced sounds clinical, but here it is an exact word—care was taken to destroy only the faces on the mounted photos. There is no chance that such damage occurred from weather or settling earth. It's Not That Hard: Talking to Children About Gender Identity

Tue Feb 07 2017

I can imagine that our shift towards a more inclusive society has caused more than one parent trepidation in regard to explaining things to their children. I’m sure at least one person has said to themselves, “Hey, I just figured out talking about gay and straight. Now I have to talk about gender identity with an 8-year-old? Impossible.” View at huffingtonpost »

We the People

Wed Feb 01 2017

I Hope You Never Know

Mon Jan 23 2017

The truth is, I hope all my friends never have to experience the oppression that made that beautiful international march necessary. This is my letter to those who can’t fathom why the march resonated with so many of us. View at huffingtonpost »

Its' Not the End of the World (Yet)

Fri Jan 20 2017

It feels like the end of the world. I want to lie on the floor for the next four years. (The couch takes too much effort and offers too much comfort.) Many of my friends are fired up and mobilizing, but I’m not there yet. I’m still lying on the floor. View at huffingtonpost »

A Mother’s Response to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport Shooting

Fri Jan 06 2017

Airports were always happy places for me. They contained the expectation of adventure and were filled with people going somewhere, and I was one of those people, too. Every summer, my brother and I boarded a plane in Rochester, NY, and followed a daisy chain of connecting flights to end in Anchorage, Alaska, over 4,000 miles away. View at huffingtonpost »

A Divorced Mom Talks to Her Children About Marriage

Tue Dec 27 2016

I don’t want my kids to grow up thinking they are failures if they get divorced. I don’t want them to think that they even have to get married. And I also don’t want them to think happily ever after is just a pipe dream they can never achieve. View at huffingtonpost »
